There is currently a great deal of publicity relating to math books that can teach children multiplication tables up to 12 times in less than an hour.
Essentially, the skill involved in achieving this is not through learning the tables by rote but rather learning a set of strategies to help you work out the answers. This approach to maths has been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years.
